None of us would be here without trees – and the more we have, the better it is for everyone on earth. They are our biggest weapon in combating climate change, absorbing and storing harmful carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and releasing clean, breathable oxygen back into the air.

Green Task Force

All our UK trees are planted by veterans via The Green Task Force. This is a subsidiary of the UK Charity the PATT Foundation and was established to solve a number of prominent issues surrounding both the environment and our veterans.

A staggering 6% of serving & former serving personnel, and 17% of those that have been in a combat situation are suffering from some form of PTSD. Service leavers also suffer a lot of stress & anxiety when transitioning from the service.

It has been proven that getting veterans involved in Nature Based Therapy (NBT) has a positive effect on their mental health.

The power of trees

We all know that planting trees is a really effective and simple way to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere. But what is the impact of a single tree – and how much CO2 does it actually remove from the air? The answer is more than you might think.

Our resident tree expert, Dr Andrew Steel, who heads up The Green Task Force, conservatively estimates that planting a tree in the UK will absorb 0.7 tonnes of CO2 over its lifetime. And a tree planted and maintained in the rainforest will absorb 0.3 tonnes of CO2 during its life. So the more you plant, the bigger the impact.

The amount of CO2 absorbed by any tree can vary widely depending on several factors, such as its species, life span, the climate and soil conditions, as well as other environmental factors. But Dr Steel’s estimates are a really good rule of thumb when calculating CO2 absorption at scale.
